Lee Wadlinger
The ECB Years: 1996-1997
This 10-song EP represents a sampling of the literally hundreds of songs
written and recorded by Lee Wadlinger during the mid-90's before joining
High Water and Glenn Echo in 1998.  Some are previously released, others
have only been heard by a limited circle of friends and bandmates.

Recorded at home on a Tascam 4-track, these tunes certainly evidence the
strong influence that Guided By Voices had over Wadlinger during this
period.  This influence is particularly notable in both the average length of
these tracks and in the fidelity of the recordings: these are short songs,
often clocking in at "snippet" length, and on a number of the tracks lo-fi
"effects" like tape hiss are strategically used not only to set the mood of the
recordings, but also as an instrument in itself.

It would be a mistake, however, to brand
The ECB Years as a mere
GBV-derivative.  The acoustic instrumental, "Balcony Hangs" showcases
Wadlinger's use of the 4-track to create "pocket guitar suites," and "Magic
Marker" presents an example of his more folk-oriented work (which,
logically, lead to a slot opening for Elliot Smith during this time period).

By offering this EP as a free download, Next Best Records hopes to provide
